Operating Modes NewsBoss can be run in two different modes:
Non-Client/Server mode (sometimes called "peer to peer") is
designed for and is cost effective for small systems of 1 to 10 users.
The database is simply shared using Windows networking.
Client/Server mode is designed for systems from about 5 users and up.
Client/Server mode employs the FairCom Server software to manage the database.
Client/Server systems are faster and more robust where large systems are required.
System Configurations NewsBoss can be run in various configurations:
Single User NewsBoss is an economical solution even in the smallest newsrooms
where there is only a single user. In this situation, the power of a fairly recent model
PC combined with a multiple channel audio card, enables wire and audio capture, text and
audio editing, as well as on-air presentation to take place on the same PC.
Small and Medium Size Networked Systems Workstations connected via a local area network (LAN) are employed
in small newsrooms with under 5 users. All of the workstations access the common database
and audio files across the network. One of the workstations will serve in a dual capacity
to store the database and audio files as well as capture the wire and audio services.
Medium sized newsrooms are designed in much the same way, but will employ
a dedicated PC to store the database and audio files and perform data capture and
communication duties.
Large Networked Systems Large newsrooms will employ one or more dedicated high end PCs as
a file server as well as data capture, communication and archive services.
Redundancy and automatic fail over are also a common feature of large systems.
As there are many possible solutions to match the needs of large newsrooms, please
contact your local NewsBoss Representative for assistance in planning and design.
NewsBoss Connectivity In addition to the main newsroom, a news operation may involve
remote bureaus, field reporters, stringers as well as collaboration with other
radio newsrooms. NewsBoss offers a comprehensive set of connectivity tools to enable
gathering and dissemination of news content outside the main newsroom environment.
Redundancy and Availability Because a NewsBoss system runs on standard PC hardware
and the Windows operating system, it is compatible with almost any off the
shelf redundancy or failsafe solution.
Hardware options such as RAID 1 or 5, hot swap disk drives,
hot swap power supplies and software options such as Microsoft Cluster Server
and Legato Co-Standby Server are able to be used in a NewsBoss system to ensure
maximum availability. Please contact your local NewsBoss Representative to
discuss the options which most closely match your needs.
